Mikaela is Back to Dancing After Scoliosis Treatment
January 27, 2025
Since the age of three, Mikaela has been passionate about ballet. However, her world turned upside down last year when she was diagnosed with scoliosis. Determined to overcome this challenge, she sought treatment and support from her medical team, family, and friends. With their encouragement and her own resilience, Mikaela not only managed her back pain, she also discovered renewed strength and determination.
At Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Spine Care, Nurse Practitioner Kimberly introduced Mikaela to a treatment plan that included physical therapy and gyrotonic exercises—a method that uses three-dimensional, whole-body movements to improve strength, flexibility, and coordination.
"These treatments not only eased my back pain but also strengthened my resolve," said Mikaela. "Giving up has never been in my nature; challenges only fuel my determination."
Mikaela refused to let scoliosis define her. Instead, she turned her diagnosis into a source of inspiration. Rather than viewing it as an obstacle, she embraced it as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Her journey is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance, demonstrating how setbacks can be transformed into stepping stones toward greatness.
"My diagnosis became a catalyst, pushing me to train harder and bringing me closer to my dreams of joining a ballet company," Mikaela explains.
Despite the challenges, Mikaela continues to pursue her dream of becoming a professional ballerina. With every plié and pirouette, she proves that resilience and determination can overcome any obstacle. Her journey is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset, anything is possible.
